You know the famous cities, and that is exactly what this quiz sets its traps with.

This page describes one possible result of the quiz World capitals quiz: how many do you know?

Play it yourself

What this means

Up to five correct is a perfectly normal result, because the quiz is set up against you on purpose: most wrong answers are cities bigger, older or more famous than the real capital. If you picked Sydney for Australia or Istanbul for Turkey, you are in good company.

The same pattern repeats around the world. Canada's capital is Ottawa, not Toronto. Brazil's capital has been Brasília since 1960, not Rio de Janeiro. Nigeria moved its government from Lagos to Abuja in 1991, and New Zealand's capital is Wellington, not Auckland.

Once the rule is clear that the capital is often not the largest city, the quiz gets much easier. Try again: each game draws 15 new countries.

About the quiz: World capitals quiz: how many do you know?

Fifteen countries, each with four cities, one of which is the capital. The countries are drawn at random from more than 130 around the world, so every game is different. You have 10 seconds per question.

Many of the wrong answers are cities bigger or more famous than the capital, so gut feeling can let you down. You see right away whether you were correct, and get a result to share at the end.

How this quiz works

The questions were written by the KahurQuiz editors and the capitals checked against official national sources as of 2026. Countries whose capital is disputed or in the middle of a move are not in the bank. Where a country has more than one capital, the question says which one is meant: the political capital of Burundi is Gitega, the official capital of Sri Lanka is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, the constitutional capital of Bolivia is Sucre, and the official capitals of Tanzania and Benin are Dodoma and Porto-Novo. Switzerland has no capital set in law, but Bern is the seat of the federal government and is treated as the capital everywhere.

Each game draws 15 questions at random and each correct answer scores one point: 0–5 Beginner, 6–10 Traveller and 11–15 Geographer. The answer options are shuffled every time, so the position of the right answer tells you nothing.

Frequently asked questions

When Australia federated in 1901, Sydney and Melbourne both wanted to be the capital. The compromise was to build a new city between them. Canberra was founded in 1913 and parliament moved there in 1927.
